A meta-level architecture applied to the analysis of Jazz chord sequences

چکیده
Here are two papers about Music and Knowledge Representation, published in the International Computer Music Conference (1991, Montreal). The first one is an application of the NéOpus inference system to the analysis of jazz chord sequences. The second one is an architecture for representing knowledge used by Jazz Musicians while accompanying a soloist.

A Pregroup Grammar for Chord Sequences
In 1984, Mark STEEDMAN [7] proposed a generative grammar based on six context sensitive rewriting rules able to produce a large variety of blues chord sequences. Later, François PACHET [6] developed a method for analyzing jazz chord sequences. Then, Marc CHEMILLER [4] [5] uses STEEDMAN’s grammar to compose by computers jazz music based upon chord sequences generated by this grammar. About twent...
متن کاملComputer Analysis of Jazz Chord Sequences : Is Solar a Blues ? in Readings in Music
This chapter investigates the issue of the role of the computer in musical analysis. Starting with a survey of the main approaches in computer analysis, we focus on the particular problem of Jazz chord sequences harmonic analysis. We propose a theory of chord sequence analysis, based on an explicit conceptual hierarchy of analysis objects. We discuss the implementation of the theory and its res...
متن کاملA Robust Parser-Interpreter for Jazz Chord Sequences
Hierarchical structure similar to that associated with prosody and syntax in language can be identified in the rhythmic and harmonic progressions that underlie Western tonal music. Analysing such musical structure resembles natural language parsing: it requires the derivation of an underlying interpretation from an unstructured sequence of highly ambiguous elements— in the case of music, the no...
متن کاملToward a formal study of jazz chord sequences generated by Steedman's grammar
This paper shows how to generate jazz chord sequences incrementally using Steedman's grammar by taking advantage of some formal properties. We point out the specific role played by particular chord sequences called "cadential sequences". By precompiling them, one could improve the implementation of Steedman's grammar in a real-time system for improvisation and elaboration
متن کاملStatistical Parsing for harmonic Analysis of Jazz Chord Sequences
Analysing music resembles natural language parsing in requiring the derivation of structure from an unstructured and highly ambiguous sequence of elements, whether they are notes or words. Such analysis is fundamental to many music processing tasks, such as key identification and score transcription. The focus of the present paper is on harmonic analysis. We use the three-dimensional tonal harm...
